  1. It’s a great orchestra. The romantic music program was enjoyable and with three encores we got our money’s worth.

  2. Quite unexpectedly moving and powerful and excellently programmed.
The Little Suite by the (to me) unknown Lutaslawski was very listenable and porbably had depths not available at first listening.
The Chopin was remarkable for me on two counts besides the exceptional musicianship and rapport between pianist and conductor. First, it reminded me that Chopin was Polish patriot throughout his short life; second, I was particularly aware of the role of the basses and cellos (were they, so to speak, his second instrument?).

I’m glad we heard the Dvorak instead of the Brahms–I could, I thought, feel the Slavic atmosphere and I’m also glad the program notes placed it above the Ninth.

Very strong empathic conducting and soloing–they must have been together for ages.
Finally, what were the encores: a Chopin waltz (?, I was hoping to hear the Revolutionary Etude!); and the orchestral pieces?

  3. A wonderful evening of great music. What a shame that Umass has practically eliminated classical music from its schedule when it brings such joy.

  4. The orchestra was superb, but what a thrill to see a rising star, Avdeeva, in action. Her fingers danced over the long and difficult passages. A thrill as she jumped with the forte notes. This was a wondrous surprise for the start of the season, to see a pianist who appears so humble, yet has monumental talent.

  5. It was thrilling to watch the soloist – such talent. The entire evening was wonderful. What a treat!

  6. Fantastic concert!! Chopin cound not have been played better and I do not know her Encore but I am sure it is a popular Polish piece. Never had a Symphony orchrestra play two encores and hthe S andS Forever brought the house down. Didn’t think I would hear that from a Polish Orchestra.
    Great conducter!!
