Herbie Hancock is a true icon of modern music. Throughout his explorations, he has transcended limitations and genres while maintaining his unmistakable voice. In addition to being recognized as a legendary pianist and composer, Herbie Hancock has been an integral part of every jazz movement since the 1960s. As a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, he became one of the pioneers of the avant garde sound. His recordings during the ’70s combined electric jazz with funk and rock sounds in an innovative style that continues to influence contemporary music. “Rockit” and “Future Shock” marked Hancock’s foray into electronic dance music and included several chart-topping hits; during the same period he continued to work in an acoustic setting with V.S.O.P., which included ex-Miles Davis band mates Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. For his Amherst appearance he’ll perform with a quartet, musicians to be announced.

Hancock has received an Academy Award for his Round Midnight film score and 14 Grammy Awards, including Album Of The Year for “River: The Joni Letters” and two 2011 Grammy Awards for his recently released globally collaborative CD, “The Imagine Project.” Many of his compositions, including “Cantaloupe Island,” “Maiden Voyage,” “Watermelon Man,” and “Chameleon,” are modern standards that have had a profound effect on all styles of modern music.

  1. Unbelievable! Two and a half hours of solid free-form jazz improvization, while keeping its solid beat and funk. Each member of the quartet was an amazing musician in their own right — how did the lead guitarist from Benin do all that? — and the tight, driving combo impacted at a musical intellectual and visceral level that left the audience wide-eyed, or perhaps wide-eared… Somehow the music reached all the senses in an amazing evening’s experience.

  2. Phenomenal show! Lionel was stunning and Herbie was in great form. I loved the refrains from way back, that emerged in the midst of very contemporary sounding jams. A wonderful expression of joy and and life.
    Thank you!

  3. Thoroughly enjoyable evening. Not like so many other longstanding bands and icons, playing the same old notes to the same old hits. Rather, HH’s Quartet was hard driving with innovation and improv, inviting the audience on-board the standards while taking us to new musical destinations with them each and every time. Wow! And what energy! Come on!

  4. Last night’s performance was “other wordly” , truly magnificent. The genius of Herbie Hancock was in full presentation, the ensemble was superb. We had the great fortune to see Lionel Loukke at Bowker and what a surprise it was to have another chance to hear this great, talented musician. Loved his solo. Have been a Herbie Hancock fan forever.
PS. The catering before the show is just such a nice touch. Thanks for that too.

  5. The place was crowded, people seemed to like the show, and it was clear that the musicians enjoyed playing with each other. However, I thought the concert was too loud, too long (without any breaks), and very undisciplined and self-indulgent.

  6. Brilliant! An eclectic mix from a man who has mastered and fused every conceivable genre. Highlights ~ Lionel channels Bobby McFerrin, with guitar … uh, bongos … uh, drum kit … uh, bass … uh-mazing! and Herbie writes a movie soundtrack on stage! Thanks for a wonderful night FAC!

  7. What a truly memorable evening! Herbie Hancock is surely one of the greatest jazz musicians we’ve ever had and it was a thrill to be at this performance. His accompanying group of three was magnificent which was not a surprise because it stands to reason that he’d only have the very best with him. Took me two hours to wind down from this amazing performance after I got home. Was worth every second!

  8. I enjoyed the concert although Herbie went a little too far electronically for me with all the synthesizer work. I especially loved the guitar player’s solo though. What a talented guy with such a different sound!

  9. I just loved Herbie’s presence, and the way he and the members of his quartet were able to have so much fun playing impossibly difficult material – I’m thinking of Seventeens. Mr. Hancock graciously spoke of the immense talents of the members of his ensemble, he had no airs or attitudes.

  10. Awesome as usual. First saw him w/Chick Corea @Symphony Hall in Boston in 1972.
Have seen him many times since, always on the cutting edge.
