Angels in America (2002)

In-your-face graphics associated with ACT UP and the work of Gilbert and George, artists who boldly tackled gay issues,  were our inspiration for projections evocative of the 1980s.

To achieve a fluid production with no delays caused by scene changes, we chose the simplest scenic elements and props set in place by the ensemble to define the 26 scenes of Tony Kushner’s masterwork. When not in use this furniture remained on stage against the back wall. Black plastic bags piled up on the sidewalk that I would see in front of St. Vincent’s Hospital at the height of the plague suggested the right material to evoke the tension of the times. I kept the red-banded wrapping network when I returned to “Angels” in [date] with a different design that stressed the character of a “gay fantasia”
