I just passed in my second education material pamphlet design, and while it is not finalized as I have to wait for my site supervisor, and then her supervisor to approve of it, I feel great about it since this pamphlet took me 1/2 the time of the other one. It’s amazing how much I have learned regarding graphics and design just by making these two handouts. I’m really glad I’ve had a chance to learn so much in graphic/design as I’m sure I’ll be using these new skills in whatever my MPHN leads me to! My first design will be printed and given out to patients within a few months, this is exciting since the issues I addressed are current pressing questions for many of the patients in the cancer institute. Also, my own clinical nutrition manager will be using my educational materials for our inpatient oncology population 🙂

Progress!
I finished my first educational pamphlet, I’m getting quite good using Word, there’s much more there than I thought! My practicum supervisor passed it on to her manager and she liked it so much, they will be publishing it soon for their oncology library 🙂 I was also asked to write two blurbs for their weekly oncology newsletter for their patients that will run in July and August that I completed last week. I’m now starting to work on creating and editing policies and procedures to make sure everything is up to date. So far so good.
Oncology research at WHC Cancer Institute
Hello all, just wanted to pop in here real quick and tell you my thoughts on day 3 of my practicum! Right now I’m just doing a lot of reading and gathering research to put together the most recent/pertinent information that is important to our cancer patients but that they should also be aware of. I’m currently digesting a 32 page article published in April of this year by the CA journal. I just wanted to share that the overall message of the results of the research conducted was the many direct links of obesity and cancer. Specifically, ovarian, breast, and gallbladder. Because of this, I’m now changing my focus on my creation of my education materials from specific food and cancer connection questions to obesity prevention and exercise. All the more reason to continue to fight the obesity prevention fight, much work to be done still on that matter.
Washington Hospital Center Outpatient Oncology Clinic
Hi everyone! This is my 9th semester as an MPH-N student and I’m excited to embark on my summer practicum that started today. I will be working at my hospital’s outpatient oncology clinic. I will be working alongside the registered dietitian conducting literature reviews on various topics, designing patient diet education pamphlets, writing nutritional newsletters, and updating/writing policies and procedures for the clinic. I work in 2 oncology units as a full time dietitian for the past 6 years therefore I look forward to digging deeper into evidence based literature to help educate our patients better.
