I created this newsletter with contributions from our chef for the kids to take home to their parents.

Today entailed a meeting with my practicum site supervisor at the food bank. The first session I teach is set to start on 7/6/10. The program will also include a gardening portion in which children will plant seedlings, tend to them and then enjoy their harvest. Classes will start at 10 am, so I hope students will still be in a school mindset and ready to learn. Each class will start with a small healthy snack. My preceptor has found that the children’s focus is immeasurably better when they have had a snack beforehand as some kids likely come to the program without first having breakfast.

Upcoming activities include:

– I will be writing articles regarding malnutrition in the 21st century including topics such as understanding manifestations of hunger including aggression and difficulty focusing.

– 8/18-9/22- I plan to teach another six week session for school-age children and their parents. They will be learning nutrition education targeted for family health and techniques in cooking together.

– 9/10- I will participate in a viewing of the movie “Food, Inc.” and discussion with food bank volunteers.

My name is Becky Adams and I am a RD in South Jersey. I will soon embark on my practicum with the Food Bank of South Jersey (http://www.foodbanksj.org/) and Operation Frontline (http://operationfrontline.org/). I will first be focusing on nutrition education and cooking demonstrations for children 8-12 years old. Each course is a 2 hour class that runs 6 weeks. I will be starting July 6th and I will also be responsible for maintaining a blog on their website about the experience.

The program will take place at The DOT (Dreams of Tomorrow) Organization, a local non-profit (http://www.thedotorganization.com/index.html). DOT’s goal is to address concerns of South Jersey at risk youth, particularly among minorities and youth of low-income to increase education and opportunities.
