Hi All! I hope everyone had a good summer! I am writing to update everyone on my practicum at the Food Bank for Westchester in Westchester NY. Thus far I have participated in mass distributions with the Kraft Mobile Food truck, reached out to agencies like soup kitchens and food pantries to see if they would be interested in having cooking demos and nutrition education sessions on site, revised food safety guidelines, written articles for company newsletters, managed food recalls, worked with the growing program in the FB’s own gardens, researched not-for profits that can work in conjunction with the bank and begun to work on developing a tiering system to categorize which locations that best need the FB services. Finally, I am starting to become more involved with creating a program that can be initiated at our local trauma center so that low income patients with food access issues can be discharged home with a meal. The staff are great and are extremely focused on making sure no one goes hungry in our county! Food insecurity is a huge issue, especially in places where it seems everyone has full access to food.
