Meet Communication Junior Kaitlyn Gilmartin

By Nusrah Azeez and Christine Souaiden

Kaitlyn Gilmartin is a junior Communication and Journalism major on the Public Relation track. She is from Boylston, Massachusetts.

Why did you choose Communication?

When I was picking a major, I was thinking about anthropology or sociology but I wanted to combine working with people and critical thinking. I found that Communication had everything I was looking for in a major. All the classes I have taken have been worthwhile.

What do you think about the Communication department?

I think the Communication department is amazing, they provide a lot of resources for students to take advantage of and everyone is very friendly, especially the professors. All of my professors have been helpful and amazing. Also, the Comm Connection gives a very welcoming feel to the department.

Tell us about your internship in the Communication department?

I am in charge of the weekly Comm Connection. I get articles and information from different professors, peer advisors, and people outside UMass who are trying to send information about jobs and internship opportunities. I also manage the Facebook and Twitter accounts for the Comm department.

What are your other involvements on campus?

I am on a committee for the University Programming Council (UPC). We are in the process of planning the fall semester concert and it has been a fun experience. Also, I am on the PR team for the Daily Collegian and it has been an exciting experience.

If you could go back in time, what would you tell yourself as a freshman?

I would put myself out there and get involved in anything remotely interesting. When I was a freshman, I did not get involved in much because I didn’t know what was available on campus. I would also say apply to everything. I did not think I would get any of the positions that I have now.

What do your future plans look like in this field?

I hope to go into Public Relations, but I am interested in anything in the Communication field. Being in charge of the Comm Connection has taught me a lot and the internship has helped me develop skills that I can transfer into any job.

What do you like to do for fun?

I like to read and watch Netflix. I also enjoy hanging out with friends.

What is your advice to Comm students on getting internships?

The process of trying to find an internship can be stressful, however, I would say apply to everything. It might not be your dream job but it is an added experience and it gets your foot in the door. Also, check out the Comm Connection, it usually provides information on internship opportunities. Handshake is also a good source. Overall, do not underestimate yourself and apply.
