What city and state was your internship located in?

It was located in Cambridge, MA (in Central Square).

How did you get to your internship every day?

I got to my internship every day via the MBTA from Providence to South Station and then connecting to the red line in Boston.

What did you do as an intern at this organization?

I ran the back-end of various social media accounts (mainly on Twitter and Instagram) for local business around Boston and Cambridge. This meant that I went through and followed multiple people each day on each account, and unfollowed multiple people each day, to grow the followings. The intern team also went out on various excursions around Boston to do Insta stories or photographing of specific areas, either for projects directly for Metter Media or for partnerships.

Additionally, each week Metter Media puts out a blog post of all the new social media trends, and one intern per week would be in charge of curating that piece. We also would tweet out social trends, in which all of us had to research and craft tweets for at least four different stories per day.

I also created a fully new posting plan and strategy for a specific insurance account; this included background research on their previous social media usage, research other similar accounts like it, a creation of a brand new feed, and different stylistic tweaks to be added to each post. That was our biggest and final project as interns.

What did you enjoy most about your internship?

I really enjoyed our outings! We had so much fun running around Boston and getting food and being able to say we were taking hundreds of pics of one iced coffee for our job. We were all interested in social media in our own way, so we each had different perspectives. It was also a lot of fun to be in the middle of Cambridge and enjoy the summer in the city.

What did you find challenging about your internship?

Creating the new posting strategy for the specific account was something I had never done before. We were all responsible for one specific account, and it was a lot of responsibility. It was very intimidating and doing all the research of all the various other similar accounts took a lot of work. But that project was extremely rewarding because of how much work it was.

What skills did you develop through this internship?

I developed my presentation skills, my people skills, my graphic design skills (a lot), my posting skills (in terms of crafting tweets and writing short blurbs), and my research skills.

What advice would you offer to someone who is considering this internship?

Be ready for long days of sometimes “boring” work broken up by lots of fun. And be prepared to spend some money on food, or bring lots of snacks. It’s very easy to get tempted by all the awesome restaurants and cafes around. Additionally, go in prepared to learn a lot and having a lot of responsibility.
