Internship Title: Intern

Full-time or part-time? Part-time

Paid or unpaid? Unpaid

What city and state was your internship located in?

Boston, MA.

How did you get to your internship every day?

MBTA Blue Line.

What did you do as an intern at this organization?

As an intern, some of my duties included: answering phone calls from constituents, directing visitors, handling intake of new constituent casework issues, contacting federal agencies on behalf of constituents and relaying responses, completing research projects, and assisting staff with administrative and organizational tasks as they arose.

What did you enjoy most about your internship?

The environment was a very friendly, almost family feel. All the case workers were very welcoming and always happy to help. The energy in the office was never too much to handle. We did have busy days with a lot of phone calls, case work, etc. but it never became something that made us not want to be there.

What did you find challenging about your internship?

There were days that there was no work to do. I’d go to every case worker and none would have any work for us, but we weren’t allowed to leave work early.

What skills did you develop through this internship?

Keeping myself busy, learning how to multi-task, talking to constituents with difficult situations, and overall how to interact with different personalities.

What advice would you offer to someone who is considering this internship?

Be prepared to interact with difficult people. Some phone calls were very difficult to tend to, so don’t be afraid to ask for a case worker’s help. Learn how to keep busy even if there is technically no work to do.
